How Many Amphibian Species Live in Tunisia?

Seven. That’s the full amphibian roster for a country most people associate with desert and Roman ruins, not wetlands: one newt and six frogs and toads, spread across seven separate genera. No overlap, no close cousins competing for the same niche — each species claims its own patch of Tunisia’s water.

That’s a short list by global standards. Morocco, right next door and roughly the same size, has more amphibian diversity simply because it has more mountains and more rain. Tunisia’s amphibians survive by being specialists: tolerant of salt, tolerant of drought, or restricted to the handful of humid pockets — the Kroumirie highlands, Ichkeul’s wetlands, the Cap Bon peninsula — where northern Africa still looks a little like southern Europe.

Sahara Frog

Pelophylax saharicus

Ignore the name — this isn’t a frog that lives in sand dunes. The Sahara frog is North Africa’s answer to the marsh frog, and it does the one thing that lets it live in a country that’s mostly desert: it tolerates water most frogs can’t use. Brackish irrigation channels, warm oasis pools, cattle troughs that sit stagnant for weeks — the Sahara frog holds on where cleaner-water specialists disappear.

That toughness is why it’s the amphibian you’ll actually see if you visit Tunisia’s southern oases. Populations persist as far as Gabes, Tozeur, and Kebili, hundreds of kilometers past where you’d expect frogs to survive at all. It’s rated Least Concern by the IUCN Red List, and unlike most of the entries on this list, its range is expanding rather than shrinking — it’s one of the few amphibians that benefits from irrigated agriculture instead of losing habitat to it.

Mediterranean Painted Frog

Discoglossus pictus

A small, compact frog with a mottled, almost hand-painted pattern across its back — hence the name. It digs flat, shallow cavities under stones to wait out dry spells, then breeds fast in whatever temporary water shows up: irrigation ditches, brackish coastal marshes, cattle tracks that flood after rain.

In Tunisia it’s widespread but oddly patchy. It runs continuously from the humid north down to the desert oases of Gabes and Tozeur, but the populations in Kroumirie and on the Cap Bon peninsula are fragmented — isolated pockets rather than a connected range. Researchers studying the ecology of painted frogs in southern Tunisian oases have found it sharing those pools with the Sahara frog, the two species splitting the same shrinking oasis habitat between them. It’s common enough overall to avoid a threatened listing, but agricultural runoff and groundwater extraction are chipping away at local breeding sites.

Mediterranean Tree Frog

Hyla meridionalis

The only true tree frog on the list, and the loudest — its call carries across the forested valleys of the Kroumirie mountains on warm nights, well before you spot the frog itself. Small, bright green, with the round toe pads built for climbing, it needs two things most of Tunisia doesn’t have much of: standing vegetation and reliable moisture.

That’s why it’s essentially a northern species here. The humid forests around Ain Draham and the wider Kroumirie range are its Tunisian stronghold — inland and southward, the habitat simply runs out. It’s a species you go looking for near Ichkeul’s fringes or the mountain streams of the northwest, not one you stumble across in Tunis or the coastal resorts.

Algerian Ribbed Newt

Pleurodeles nebulosus

Tunisia’s only newt, and its strangest amphibian. When threatened, it does something almost no other vertebrate does: it pushes the sharp tips of its own ribs through its skin, coating them in a toxic secretion first, turning its body into a set of poisoned barbs a predator won’t want a second bite of. It’s not a party trick — it’s a documented, repeatable defense mechanism, and it’s the reason herpetologists find this newt more interesting than its plain brown-green coloring suggests.

It lives in Ichkeul National Park and El Feija National Park, the two places in Tunisia with the kind of permanent freshwater marsh, pond, and slow-moving river it needs to breed. For decades it was lumped in with a similar species, Pleurodeles poireti, until researchers confirmed that true poireti is restricted to a single mountain range in northeastern Algeria — every ribbed newt in Tunisia is P. nebulosus. The IUCN lists it as Least Concern, but its dependence on a small number of wetland sites means local habitat loss, particularly livestock overgrazing around Ichkeul’s margins, hits it harder than a broad range would suggest.

Common Toad

Bufo bufo

The same species found from Ireland to Siberia, but in Tunisia it’s living at the southern edge of a continent-spanning range, hanging on in the cooler, wetter Kroumirie highlands where conditions still resemble the European habitat it’s built for. It’s the most geographically restricted of Tunisia’s three toad species — not rare elsewhere in the world, but genuinely localized here.

Distribution surveys place it almost exclusively in the northwest, in the same humid forest belt that supports the Mediterranean tree frog. If you’re not in that specific pocket of the country, you’re unlikely to encounter it.

Berber Toad

Sclerophrys mauritanica

The heavyweight of the group — a thickset toad that reaches 13 to 15 centimeters, with an olive-to-beige back marked by large orange or red spots. Also listed under its older name, Bufo mauritanicus, it’s the toad most likely to turn up somewhere unexpected: rocky hillsides, cultivated fields, and even urban gardens.

It’s also the most widely distributed amphibian in Tunisia by geography. It runs continuously through the north, thins out toward the center and south, and still holds on around Gafsa and Tozeur at the edge of the pre-Sahara — further into arid terrain than almost any other Tunisian amphibian manages. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s ecological risk assessment on the species notes its tolerance for disturbed and human-modified habitat, which tracks with how often it shows up close to Tunisian towns rather than deep wilderness.

African Green Toad

Bufotes boulengeri

Smaller and more delicately marked than the Berber toad, with a marbled green-and-cream pattern that gives it its name. Formerly classified as a subspecies of the European green toad before genetic work split it out, it now ranges the length of North Africa from Morocco to Egypt.

In Tunisia it’s the least-documented of the seven — populations show up as isolated, scattered records rather than a continuous range, and a breeding population wasn’t formally confirmed and published until researchers documented one in the country’s herpetological literature. That’s not a sign it’s rare; it’s more likely a sign nobody had looked closely enough in the right seasonal window. It breeds explosively after rain, calls briefly, then disappears back underground — easy to miss if your visit doesn’t line up with the first good downpour.

Where to Actually Find Them

If you want a realistic shot at seeing more than one species on a trip, three areas do the heavy lifting:

Ichkeul National Park — a UNESCO-listed wetland northwest of Bizerte, and the most reliable site for the Algerian ribbed newt alongside the Sahara frog and Mediterranean painted frog.

The Kroumirie mountains, around Ain Draham — Tunisia’s wettest, most forested corner, and the only place to reasonably expect the common toad and Mediterranean tree frog together.

Cap Bon peninsula — patchier, but holds fragmented painted frog populations in a landscape otherwise dominated by agriculture and coastline.

Further south, the oases around Gabes and Tozeur are worth a look for anyone specifically after the Sahara frog or Berber toad — proof that Tunisian amphibians don’t need lush forest, just water that sticks around.

Why the List Stops at Seven

Every academic account of Tunisian herpetofauna — including the country’s most detailed conservation review, published in Basic and Applied Herpetology — arrives at the same number, and the reason isn’t underreporting. It’s geography. Amphibians need standing or slow-moving fresh water to breed, and Tunisia simply doesn’t have much of it outside a few mountain ranges, one large wetland reserve, and a string of desert oases. Every species on this list is there because it solved that problem in its own way: by tolerating salt, by shrinking its range to the wettest corner of the country, or by breeding in the narrow window after rain and disappearing for the rest of the year.

None of Tunisia’s seven amphibians are currently listed as threatened — a genuinely rare piece of good news in North African conservation. But “least concern” is a description of today, not a guarantee. Groundwater extraction, agricultural runoff, and grazing pressure around wetland margins are the threats that show up again and again in the research, and they hit small, geographically pinned-down populations — the ribbed newt at Ichkeul, the common toad in the Kroumirie highlands — far harder than they’d hit a species with room to move.
