The best dog clippers for matted hair take a detachable blade and carry a maker’s claim for thick or matted coats. Oster’s own blade chart names a 7F blade for a matted coat, so buy the blade with the clipper. Pick by how bad the mats are, then by whether your dog can stand near an outlet.
- Heavy mats near an outlet: Wahl KM10+, the corded brushless pick that Wahl says keeps cutting through matted coats.
- A nervous dog: Andis AGC2, a sealed motor that Andis says reduces noise.
- No outlet nearby: Wahl KMC+, which adds up to 2 hours of battery to the same claim for matted coats.
- A few small mats on a small dog: Oneisall RFC-676, the only Budget clipper here.

Find the best dog clippers for matted hair
Six questions cover the severity of the mats, your dog’s size and coat, power, noise and budget. Answering “matted all over” shows only clippers whose maker names thick, heavy or matted coats.
Should this coat be clipped at home?
Check this before buying anything. PetMD says to stop and call a groomer or your vet when a mat:
- sits tight against the skin or covers a large part of the body
- will not loosen with gentle brushing
- makes the dog cry, snap or resist
- is near the eyes, ears, genitals or anus
- has redness, swelling, odor, moisture or discharge around it
Red, raw, moist or broken skin under a mat is an emergency, by the same article. A vet can sedate a dog for extensive mats, which the ASPCA also describes for severe cases.
Everything below assumes mats you can get a blade under on a dog that will stand for it. For coat-heavy breeds, the long-term cost of the coat sits in our guides to big hairy dog breeds and big shaggy dog breeds.

If the mats are heavy and the coat is thick
Two corded clippers fit here. A cord takes the battery out of the question, and both makers name heavy coats or tough mats.
- Brushless motor with two speeds: 3,000 and 3,700 SPM
- Maker names thick, dense and matted coats
- Ships with a #10 Prime Series blade
- Constant speed control stated by Wahl
- Maker says cooler and quieter than its rotary KM5
- Corded only
- Weighs 2.1 lb
- A #10 cuts to about 1/16 in, so skin sits close to the blade
The KM10+ is the only corded clipper in this list whose maker names matted coats on its own product page.
- Universal motor with two speeds: 2,100 and 2,700 SPM
- Ships with a #10 CryogenX blade
- Takes all Oster A5 detachable blades
- Oster's own copy names tough mats and thick coats
- Oster publishes a blade chart by breed
- Corded only
- Lowest top speed of the corded picks
- Weighs about 2 lb
- Oster says to oil the blade before and during use
Oster’s product page lists 2,700 SPM on high and fit with every Oster A5 blade, and Oster’s own copy points that speed at full-body clipping and tough mats. It is the slowest of the corded picks, so plan on oil before and during the clip, as Oster tells users to do.
If your dog is scared of the noise
Noise claims are scarce in this category. Only Oneisall prints a figure (55 dB), and the rest are the makers’ descriptions.
- Rotary motor with two speeds: 2,700 and 3,400 SPM
- Sealed motor with no vents or fans
- Takes Andis UltraEdge, CeramicEdge, ShowEdge and Oster A-5 blades
- Maker states lower noise for sensitive pets
- Wide blade choice
- Corded only
- Andis does not list the blade size in the box
- No matted-coat wording from the maker
Andis lists UltraEdge, CeramicEdge, ShowEdge and Oster A-5 blades. Its top speed of 3,400 SPM is lower than the others, and the blade size in the box is not on the Andis page, so check the listing before you order a second blade.
If there is no outlet where you clip
Choose cordless when no outlet reaches the spot where you clip. Two of these three also run on a cord, which matters when a matted coat outlasts the charge.
- Brushless motor, two speeds: 3,700 and 4,500 RPM
- Up to 2 hours cordless, plus a corded mode
- 10-minute quick charge stated by Wahl
- Maker names matted coats
- Corded backup when the battery runs down
- Premium tier
- Check A5 fit before buying other blades
- Weight not stated by the maker
- Brushless motor, two speeds: 3,000 and 3,700 RPM
- Two interchangeable batteries, up to 3 hours each
- Weighs 12.3 oz, with a #10 Prime Series blade
- A charged spare battery keeps a long clip going
- Light for a professional cordless clipper
- No corded mode listed
- Wahl names only its own #10 blade; A5 fit not stated
- Wahl UK lists 3 hours per battery, the Amazon listing 4
- Premium tier
The KM Supera has no corded mode. A charged second battery keeps the clip going, and Wahl’s UK page says the faster of its two speeds helps cut through thicker or matted hair. Wahl names only its own #10 Prime Series blade, so confirm blade fit before you buy a 7F. Wahl’s UK page lists 3 hours of runtime per battery and the Amazon listing says 4, so plan on the lower figure.
- Up to 3 hours cordless, with corded operation
- Adjustable 5-in-1 FINE blade
- Two stainless guide combs (6 mm and 10 mm) and a USB-C cable in the box
- Corded operation when the battery runs down
- One blade covers several lengths
- No matted-coat claim from Wahl
- Not a detachable A5-style blade
- Wahl lists 3 hours of runtime, the Amazon listing says 4
- Wahl does not state the motor type or speed
The Motiva2 is here for the second half of the job. Wahl claims steady cutting power through thick and dense coats but names no matted coats, and the 5-in-1 FINE blade in the box is a close cut. Wahl lists 3 hours of runtime, an hour less than its Bravura2 offers for the same finishing work. Use it to even out the coat after a heavier clipper, or on small mats in a light coat.
If there are only a few small mats
Behind the ears, in the armpits and at the collar line are the usual spots, and these need a light clipper more than a strong one. PetMD lists the same friction points: under the legs, around the tail and between the toes as well.
- 55 dB noise level stated by the maker
- Weighs 10.97 oz
- Sold with a set of 10 guide combs
- Only Budget clipper here
- Only clipper here with a stated noise figure
- Uses its own detachable blades, not A5
- Runtime figure appears only on the Amazon listing
- Listing names medium, curly double and short coats
- Five speeds from 2,500 to 4,500 SPM
- Weighs 12.8 oz
- Ships with a CeramicEdge blade, oil and a spare blade drive
- Light for a corded clipper
- Maker states cooler clipping on low speed
- No thick-coat or matted-coat claim from Andis
- A5 blade fit not stated
- Corded only
At 12.8 oz, the Excel weighs well under half of the KM10+. Andis makes no thick-coat claim for it, so stay on spot work and small dogs.
Blades and coolant for matted coats
The blade decides whether a clipper gets under a mat. The Oster canine blade chart lists a 7F for a matted coat in nearly all of its 24 breed entries, and PetMD quotes a groomer who says a 7F or a #10 is usually needed on neglected coats. PetSmart says its salons reach for the shortest blade on large mats, because the blade has to pass under the mat.
Oster’s chart starts at the 7F, which leaves twice the hair of an Andis #10 between blade and skin. A mat that a 7F or #10 cannot pass under is a tight mat, and tight mats go to a groomer. Oster’s size 7 skip-tooth, sold for extremely matted dogs, is a different blade from the 7F. Leave it to experienced hands.
| Blade | Andis cut length | Use on a matted coat |
|---|---|---|
| 3-3/4 skip-tooth | 13 mm (1/2 in) | First pass to take off length |
| 5FC | 6.3 mm (1/4 in) | Longer finish, no mat claim |
| 7FC | 3.2 mm (1/8 in) | Oster’s chart lists 7F for matted coats |
| #10 | 1.5 mm (1/16 in) | Tighter mats, and the face, underarms and groin |
| #30 | 0.5 mm (1/50 in) | Closest cut here |
Blade numbers do not match across brands. Wahl’s help page lists the #10 setting on its 5-in-1 blade at 2.4 mm, against 1.5 mm for the Andis #10. Read the millimeters.
- Size 7F, about 1/8 in left on the dog
- CryogenX blade from Oster
- Listed for Oster A6, Golden A5, Turbo A5 and Power Max
- Named on Oster's own chart for matted coats
- Leaves about 1/8 in, so tight mats still need a groomer
- Confirm your clipper takes A5-style blades
- Leaves about 1/2 in (13 mm)
- Skip-tooth spacing for bulk removal
- Listed for AGC, BDC, BGC, BGR, DBLC, MBG and SMC series
- Cuts down long hair before a finish blade
- First pass only
- Leaves too much hair to clear a tight mat
- Coolant, lubricant and cleaner in one spray
- 14 fl oz aerosol can
- Non-flammable formula, safe on most plastics, per Wahl
- Dries quickly without a heavy oil residue
- Wahl states a non-flammable formula
- Aerosol can, not a pump bottle
- Blades still need frequent heat checks

How to clip a matted dog without cutting skin
- Start on a dry coat. Moisture worsens tangles.
- Take off loose length first with a skip-tooth blade if the hair is long and sits away from the skin, then change to the 7F.
- Hold the skin flat. Oster tells users to keep the skin pulled tight and flat while clipping.
- Slide under the mat. PetSmart says the blade goes underneath it. If you cannot get a blade under, stop: that mat is a job for a groomer.
- Check blade heat often. PetMD’s home grooming guide warns that a hot blade can burn skin. Swap blades or use coolant.
- Go slowly at the thin skin. The same guide flags the underarms, the hocks and where the stifle meets the belly. Keep those folds out of the blade.
- Hold ear tips so only fur sits above your fingers, as Wahl’s clipping guide shows, and stay out of the ear canal.
Afterward, look over the skin. PetMD describes clipper burn as a lesion from a hot blade, most often on the cheek, and says itchy, moist hot spots can appear a few days after a groom. A moist or scabby patch goes to your vet.
Best dog clippers for matted hair: owner reports on Reddit
For anyone searching best dog clippers for matted hair reddit, a commenter on r/doggrooming says a 10 blade cannot get under a tight mat, so that dog needs a groomer. Others there warn that a 7 blade is only for experienced hands and that 7s drag skin into the blade. A KM10 user on r/doggrooming reports they run cooler and are lighter than an UltraEdge but needed a new cord at six months. A groomer on r/doggrooming who picked the Wahl KM Supera over the Heiniger Opal says it is quieter and had fewer problems at release. On r/poodles, the blade heat routine is to keep two blades, swap when one heats up and oil often.
How we chose
We started from what makers state about thick and matted coats, then checked motor, blade fit, runtime and noise claims against each maker’s page and the Amazon listing on November 5, 2026. Blade advice comes from Oster, Andis, Wahl, the ASPCA, VCA, PetMD and PetSmart. We ran no lab test and clipped no dogs with these products.
We left out the Andis eMERGE, which ships with a #30 blade, too close for a matted coat.
FAQ
Can human hair clippers be used on a matted dog?
No. PetSmart's grooming guide warns against human clippers and beard trimmers: they are weaker on dense hair and can cause clipper burn because they cut shorter.
Is matted hair painful for dogs?
It can be. The ASPCA says even mild mats can irritate skin and progress to infected lesions, and severe mats can cut off blood supply to a limb. Mats around the hind end can also get in the way of passing stool.
Is shaving a matted dog cruel?
Not when mats have gone too far to brush. PetSmart's grooming guide calls shaving the only effective and comfortable option for a pelted coat, and says nearly all coats grow back. The ASPCA's advice never to shave down to the skin covers summer cooling, a different situation.
Why do clippers stop cutting partway through a matted coat?
Dry or dull blades pull instead of cutting. Wahl says oil helps a clipper run cooler, and that a blade still pulling after oiling needs replacing or sharpening. Keep a second sharp blade ready for a long clip.
Should a matted dog be bathed before clipping?
No. VCA says to clear tangles before bathing, because they can become impossible to remove after a bath. PetMD lists moisture from baths, swimming and rain as something that worsens tangles. Clip first, then bathe.
Can scissors be used on a small mat?
The ASPCA says never, because a dog can jerk and suffer a deep cut, and VCA says only clippers should remove mats. Mats sit close to the skin, so it is hard to see where hair ends. RSPCA Australia is the exception: it allows blunt-nosed safety scissors for a stubborn mat.
What can be hiding under a mat?
The ASPCA says fleas and ticks can live deep in a mat out of sight, and VCA says hot spots can sit hidden under matted fur. Matted hair also holds water after rain or a swim, which keeps the skin wet.
Have any dog clippers been recalled recently?
No Wahl, Andis, Oster or Heiniger clipper appears in the US CPSC recall database since November 2023. The one hair clipper recall found in that period is the StyleCraft Instinct, a barber clipper, recalled in June 2024 over battery overheating. Oster's 2026 recall of Blade Wash and Kool Lube applies to Canadian-sold products and concerns labelling.
